English I

Information

Welcome to English I.  I am excited about the prospect of teaching you this semester in an English course that will focus on different types of literature.  Commit yourself now to diligence and hard work and the semester will be successful.  You are responsible for you, so make the most of now and consequently the future.  Writing and reading are core components of this course, both in class and at home.  Please commit yourself to doing all work that is required. 

 

English I is a required course for all freshman in North Carolina.  All of your knowledge will be tested at the end of the semester with the 9^th Grade End-of-Course exam, held on June 3, 2008.  In order to pass this class, you must pass the EOC.

Materials Needed Daily

·        “Marble” 100-page composition book/daybook

·        Minimum of two (2) SHARPENED pencils at all times

·        Black/blue pen

·        Your PERSONAL roll of scotch tape

·        Highlighters

 

Extra credit materials

I ask that each student bring AT LEAST one of the following for the entire class to use.  Each item will count for extra credit. 

·        Scotch tape*

·        Post-It Notes*

·        Highlighters

·        Pack of notebook paper

·        Clorox wipes

·        Germ-X

·        Ink cartridges*

 

Grading Policy

·        Daily work(quizzes, homework, etc.):  30%

·        Major grades(tests, projects, etc.):  30%

·        Writing(personal, essays, papers, etc.):  30%

·        Participation(prepared for class, active in class, respectfulness) 10%

 

Procedures and Policies

·        Starting class

o       Start Mugshots/warm-up as soon as you are in the classroom

o       Participation grade

o       After attendance, be ready to share warm-up

·        Leaving class

o       Three times all semester

o       Must have pass

·        Leaving seat

o       Only during independent work/group work

o       NEVER during lecture

·        Food and drinks

o       NOTHING other than bottled water

·        Our environment

o       Use the trashcans

o       Do not mark on desks

o       Respect all things in the classroom

o       Books/bags under desks

·        Asking questions

o       By raising hand AT ALL TIMES

o       Only pertinent and appropriate questions

·        Tardy Policy

o       Tardy when not in seat working QUIETLY when bell rings
